My main area of research is on the gender politics of natural resources, but for several years I have maintained a separate line of inquiry on transgender rights and experiences within the international refugee system. In particular, I have done fieldwork in Lahore, Pakistan, and traced the outcomes of transgender Pakistanis who seek asylum in Europe. I have a book chapter published on the drivers of this migration and now am collaborating on a second project for the Migration Institute of Finland on the outcomes of transgender youth from Pakistan living in Greek refugee centers.
Recently, I was part of a Zoom panel for a public education group, Overseas Progressive Pakistanis. The purpose of the webinar was to interrogate the challenges of navigating transgender identities in both Pakistan and across the globe. The recording and my PPT is below.
My 12-minute presentation starts at 50 minutes if you’d like to skip ahead.
